Traffic jams are quite common during the holiday seasons and can be more than 60 kilometers at the entry to a city or exit of a payed highway. We often spent some hours to get off the highway and into Kyoto.

Around the big cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe and many others, the daily rush hour also brings traffic jams, even on the best highways, since there are so many bottlenecks to exit.

We used to get up at 2 in the morning and cross the Tokyo city circle from Kamakura in the south of Tokyo to the northern outskirts past Utsunomiya, on the way to Tohoku, the northern regions.

I wonder what Matsuo Basho would say to this kind of road congestion.

Traffic signs and haiku

Haiku Traffic Signs Bring Poetry To NYC Streets

John Morse, NYC

Morse says one delightful and unexpected consequence of the project is that it has brought some haiku poets out of the woodwork. "One of the joys of doing this sort of thing is how many people have responded to it with their own haiku," Morse says. "There's just a plethora of haiku coming out. It's so exciting."

She was driving on her way back from Matsuyama to Tokyo. Near Tsuyama, she got into a traffic jam and tried a different road ... but alas ...
NHK, Haiku Okoku December 2010

I live close to Tsuyama (Western Japan) and know the problems on the mountain roads in the area.
If you do not have proper equipment, it is quite dangerous and traffic can be halted for a long time.
